William Ashburn, age 72, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and children by his side on Thursday, January 19th. Bill was born May 17th 1944 in Beacon, NY to Dr. Harry V. Ashburn and Evelyn Kimble Ashburn. Bill joined the Beacon Police Department on July 26th, 1965, rose through the ranks and retired as Chief in 1985. After retiring from the police department, he began a new career in construction estimation at Merritt Meridian Construction in Beacon, until full retirement in 1996. As a police officer Bill was recognized with many awards, including a life saving award for saving two people from a house fire. He shared this award with retired Lt. William Penn. Bill was a life member of Lewis Tomkins Hose Fire Company, Mase Hook and Ladder Fire Company, New York State Chiefs of Police Association, Retired Police Association of New York, Police Conference of New York, Fraternal Order of Police, Beacon, NY Elks Lodge and past president and co-founder of the Beacon Retired Police Officer Association. Bill is survived by his wife Cherry, his son Edward and granddaughters Alexandra, Evelyn and Ella of Cold Spring, NY. His son Eric and his wife Nicole and grandsons Mason, William and Harrison of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also survived by his brother John Ashburn and his wife Cindy of Wappingers Falls, NY. Bill is predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Nancy Ashburn and Barbara Ashburn Glass.
