Barbara S. Scofield, 75, a longtime Beacon resident formerly of the Bronx, passed away on August 18, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was born on June 20, 1946 in the Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Hans & Elise Gentsch.
Barbara is survived by her son Adam Clauson, and her two-stepchildren: Bridget Hulling and Richard Scofield Jr.. She is survived by her loving grandchildren: Mason Hollop, Sophia Clauson, Riley ‘Ace’ Clauson; and Streven Teiter, Jenna Saunders, Taylor and Brianna Habinowski, Alexis, Kayla and Joey Scofield. She is also survived by her faithful companion dog, Stormy, whom she loved dearly.
Along with her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister Helga Schubert.
Barbara worked for over 20-years at Dykes Lumber in New York, NY where she was a millwork specialist. Known by her Dykes work family as “the window queen”, she was an expert in the industry and worked tirelessly, commuting to her office in Harlem until her recent retirement.
Barbara enjoyed life, especially the simplest of things, through art and nature; she loved gardening, the flowers and birdwatching. She was an artist, she enjoyed watercolors and painting. She loved spending time at the beach; and being in the company of her family. She was an exceptional decorator and cook. An invite to eat at Barb’s house was a real treat – between her incredible dishes and specialty cocktails everyone left happy! Her beautiful front porch overflowing with greenery, flowers and herbs was the talk of the town. She had a real talent for both gardening and decorating and took great pride in the gut-restoration of her 1800s-era Beacon home.
Of special note is the unique mark that Barbara left on so many of those she leaves behind. Barb took everyone under her wing; young and old, from friends of friends to children and grandkids of friends, to commuter train buddies and more. She was the kind of person who came into your life and immediately felt like family. Barb was such a treasure and a blessing to so many people. We are so thankful for all of the love and wisdom that she graced us with during her time here on earth.
To a woman who has earned an eternity of happiness and rest. We hope you are now splitting your days between your favorite beach and a beautiful porch surrounded by your show-stopping blooms; with a few cats and a dog or two keeping you company. Thank you for lifting us up when we needed it most. May you rest peacefully now and take pride in the legacy you have left behind.
