It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judith Taplitz, who died in the early hours of August 4, 2024.
Judith was born July 9, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Morris Taplitz and Ruth Taplitz (nee Berman). She grew up in Edison, NJ until the age of 11 and then moved to the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, after the death of her father. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School at the age of 17 and enrolled for a year at Brooklyn College, following which she spent a year in the newly founded state of Israel, where she lived and worked on a kibbutz. Upon her return she moved to Toronto where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Paul Davidovits, whom she married in May,1957.
Their’s was a long and deeply caring marriage, which flourished for 67 years, until her death. Together they built a life rich with friends, travel, a love of Judaism and a deep devotion to one another. They had two children: Michael and Deborah, and lived in New York City, New Haven, CT, Newton, MA and most recently Beacon, NY. They also maintained a winter residence in Osprey, FL.
In addition to taking care of her family, Judith maintained a career that had several chapters, united by her commitment to nurturing and caring for others. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State College with a degree in special education, worked for a few years in that field and then started and directed a pre-school at Synagogue Beth El in Sudbury, MA. She then returned to school, earning a Master’s in Social Work from Boston University and worked as a psychotherapist until her retirement in 2020. She was a compassionate clinician, beloved by her patients who were as committed to her as she was to them.
In addition to her family and her work, Judith loved the Southwest, birds, a beautiful idea, a walk in the woods, reading, carving stone, collecting interesting sticks and rocks, writing and reading poetry, a clever pun, a good stinky pinkie, Jewish Philosophy and repairing the world.
She is survived by her husband, her children, their spouses (Matthew Harle and Markie Sallick), her three grandchildren (Samuel Harle, Ava Davidovits and Shoshana Davidovits), her brother (Henry Taplitz) and his spouse (Edward Cohen).
May her memory continue to nourish our souls until the end of our days.
