Melvin King, Jr., a resident of Beacon, was Called Home to the Lord peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Taconic Rehabilitation and Nursing at Beacon; he was 85 years old. He was born in Chesapeake, VA on June 24, 1937, son of the late Melvin King Sr. and Lula Jane (Waddell) King.
Melvin proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from June 14, 1957 and was honorably discharged on June 8, 1959.
On January 15, 1972 in White Plains, NY, he married Barbara Jean Tyler, who predeceased him after 44-years of marriage.
Melvin worked for over 35-years at the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare Hospital, Montrose Campus; as a certified nurses assistant, until he retired. He was a devout faithful member of the Beulah Baptist Church of Wappingers Falls, NY; where he served on numerous ministries. He was a servant leader of the trustees ministry, a member of the usher’s ministry, and a servant leader of the male choir “Brothers of Gideon”. He loved to sing, and sing for the Lord, whom he loved.
Melvin was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 48 of Beacon.
Melvin or as he was affectionately known by his family “Pop”, is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Carmen Smith; several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, William Austin (Carol) King and his sister, Jean (James E.) Wynn; a special nephew Darren Bonner.
Along with his beloved wife Barbara Jean, he was predeceased by his two sisters, Jessie Lee Ramsey and Marie DeWitt Bonner.
His Family & Friends will gather on Saturday, June 17th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Beulah Baptist Church, 1494 North Road, Wappingers Falls, New York, where a Home-Going Service will be offered at 11:30am, followed by Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard.
