In the predawn hours of Thursday, August 29, Rita Lena Solomon passed peacefully. She was 100 years old.
She lived those 100 years fully from beginning to end. Of all the accomplishments in her long and varied life, she was most proud that she successfully raised five children – Kenneth, Leon, Neil, David, and Nancy – each different, each his or her own person. And she always tried to lend a hand in the different communities her life brought her to: in the Bronx (NY) and Clifton (NJ) she brought up her children and was a favorite sister and aunt; in Boulder (CO) she did volunteer work in the Jewish congregation; and in Santa Fe (NM) she volunteered at the hospital and for hospice.
Rita traveled across the United States – and around the world. She loved visiting new places and was thrilled when her children moved to points far or foreign, since it gave her the excuse to visit and to explore new cultures, new terrain.
Wherever she lived and whenever she traveled, she always made friends, some for life. These friends included her seven siblings and their spouses, and the 19 nieces and nephews just on her mother’s side of the family. They also included her late beloved husband of 28 years, George Joseph Solomon (whom she met while in Florida).
Rita is survived by four children and their spouses: Nancy (Kevin), David (Maria), Neil (Annje), and Kenneth (Susan), and by her grandchildren, Rachel, Zoe, Lea, Jada and Andy. Her son Leon, and her grandson Sam, predeceased her.
She will be missed by her family and friends, but her memory will live on in all of them.
