Verna Ticehurst

December 10, 1926 — September 6, 2011

Verna Ticehurst, 84, of Beacon, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 6th. Born to the late Theresa and Thomas Mortensen in the Burnsville section of Beacon, near Dennings Point, on December 10th, 1926, she would be a Beacon resident all her life. After moving to the family home on Jackson Street with her parents and brothers, Bob and Tom, Verna attended St. Joachim's Elementary School and went on to graduate from Beacon High School. Verna married Gordon Ticehurst in 1946 and two years later they moved to Gordon's parents' home on Russell Avenue (the house where Gordon was born) to care for his ailing mother. She and Gordon would later make it their own home, where they raised their two sons, Mark and Glenn, and where Verna happily resided until her death. Verna was a great cook and a lover of good food. She could recount in great detail the menu and preparation techniques of the most recent holiday meal, barbeque and clambake. Her greatest pleasure in life was sharing good food and good times with her loving, and much-loved, family. Verna is survived by her husband, F. Gordon Ticehurst , and her children, Mark Ticehurst and his wife, Virginia, of Landisburg, Pennsylvania, and Glenn Ticehurst and his wife, Virginia Lanigan, of Katonah, New York. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Mortensen and his wife, Maria, of Clinton Corners, New York. Verna was loving grandmother to Christian Ticehurst and his wife, Erin, of Philadelphia, Seth Ticehurst and his wife, Julie, of Brewster, New York, Evan Ticehurst and his wife, Christine, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Jane Yarborough and her husband, Joseph, of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Hayden Ticehurst of Katonah. Verna was great-grandmother to Jackson and Hudson Ticehurst of Brewster, and Anna Maeve Ticehurst of Carlisle. Verna was blessed by loving and attentive nieces and nephews, especially Rhonda and Daniel O'Connor of Poughkeepsie, Kathy and Douglas Lucy of Fishkill, and Kristin and Robert Mortensen of Milton, New York, and Sandra and Michael Reid of Clearwater, Florida. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Mortensen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 16th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joachim's Church, 51 Leonard Street, Beacon.
