William Fischer

Fischer, William a lifelong resident of Cold Spring, entered into rest September 13, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 92. Born January 28, 1920 in Cold Spring, he was the son of the late George J. and Bella Jane Peters Fischer. On September 16, 1945 he married Mary Arquilla in Beacon. Mrs. Fischer pre-deceased him December 9, 2005. William was a retired butcher for the US Military Academy, West Point, NY. He was a past member of the B.P.O. Elks, Beacon. Mr. Fischer was a U.S. WWII Army Veteran, serving in Europe in 38th Armored Infantry Batallion from 1942 until 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he suffered on September 17, 1944. He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge, and held as a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Certificate of Merit for outstanding service during the drive of the Seventh Armored Division through France. Survivors include his sister, Hazel Larson of Seattle WA, a brother-in-law Augustine Arquilla of Beacon, his three sisters-in-law Geraldine Arquilla, Jean Arquilla, and Deanna (Dee) Arquilla all of Beacon, as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother George Fischer and sisters Irene Fischer Chase, Elizabeth Mooney and Gladys Ormiston. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Libby Funeral Home, Inc. 55 Teller Ave. Beacon, NY. Funeral services will take place Monday, September 17 at 11:00 am at Libby Funeral Home, Inc. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, Beacon.
