Margaret Merandy

May 13, 1927 — July 5, 2020

Cold Spring, NY, - Julia Margaret "Peg" (Monroe) Merandy, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2020 at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Peekskill. One of 10 children of Samuel Monroe and Catherine (Trimble) Monroe, Peg was born on May 13, 1927 at the Butterfield Hospital in Cold Spring. She grew up on Garden Street in Cold Spring. As a teenager Peg worked at National Biscuit Co. in Beacon. Peg’s parents and siblings were a great source of loving support and strength. Growing up she was closest to her older brother Elliot ‘Dick’ Monroe with whom she shared a mischievous sense of humor and youthful capers in and around Cold Spring and Beacon. On April 1, 1951 – after six years of courtship – Peg married her neighbor and great love, Roland ‘Sonny’ Merandy, a WWII veteran. Together they made a home at 10 Whitehill Place and raised four children, Roland, Dave, Cathy and Linda. Peg and Sonny enjoyed forty-five years of marriage until Sonny's death in 1994. As mother to children attending the Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School, Peg was a member of the Mother's Guild and will be long remembered by a few fortunate Cold Spring residents and Loretto School alumni for her pioneering physical education classes in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1980, Peg returned to the workforce as Supervisor of Housekeeping for Holiday Inn in Fishkill – an experience that provided Peg great friendships and much laughter. Peg enjoyed crocheting, reading detective novels, and backyard birding, and always kept her hummingbird feeders well-filled. A proud homemaker, Peg lovingly maintained ample stores of home-made cakes and cookies. Her house was a favorite destination for family and friends seeking a good laugh and plate of delicious cookies. Most recently, Peg's life was enriched by the friendships and collective crafting she enjoyed at the Cold Spring United Methodist Church's weekly crochet gatherings. She continued to be inspired by the crochet-hook artistry of her neighbors with whom she enjoyed a sense of shared purpose, and was quite adept at expanding her stitch repertoire. Peg is survived by her four children Roland Merandy and his wife Darla Merandy of Sisters, Oregon, Dave Merandy and his wife Stephanie Hawkins of Cold Spring, Cathy Merandy of Patterson, New York and Linda (Merandy) Pidala and her husband Steve; her sister, Mildred ‘Mitzy's’ (Monroe) LeFever of Poughkeepsie, New York; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Peg are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Cold Spring United Methodist Church — Prayer Shawl Group mailed to 216 Main Street, Cold Spring, New York 10516 or the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corp, 14 Cedar Street, Cold Spring, New York 10516.
